The Boundless Heart and Loving the Self: The Somatic Practice of Bodhicitta

September 19 - December 4

An Online Immersion with Reggie Ray and Caroline Pfohl

Registration is not yet open.

In this new online immersion we enter the third yana, dedicated to awakening our hearts. Through the somatic practice of bodhicitta, we come to know the boundless and unconditioned state of ultimate bodhicitta, our natural state, our Buddha nature. And we discover that while it is utterly open, the space is not void -- it has a luminosity, an energy of awareness.  This is the most fundamental love of our being, welling up within us, longing to be offered to the world.

This first bodhicitta course explores ultimate bodhicitta as well as maitri, or loving-kindness, toward oneself. A somatic understanding of the ultimate, or dharmakaya, and an ability to appreciate the sacredness of our own being are essential in order to love others and to be of benefit to the world.

The next bodhicitta course will focus on relative bodhicitta, where we bring the inherent love of our being into all of the relationships and circumstances of our lives.

About the Teachers

Dr. Reginald “Reggie” Ray will be co-leading this pre-recorded course. Reggie draws on four decades of study and intensive Reggie_Ray-229-150x150meditation practice within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition to address the unique problems, inspirations, and spiritual imperatives of modern people. He is the founder and Spiritual Director of the Dharma Ocean Foundation, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the practice, study, and preservation of the teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and the practice lineage he embodied.

Caroline Pfohl is co-leading this pre-recorded course. Caroline is the lineage successor of the Dharma Ocean lineage. Her spiritual journey has included three decades of study and practice in Chan, Taoism, and Tibetan Buddhism.  Within Dharma Ocean, she holds the role of Desung (Protector of Joy), and drawing on lifelong work in educating and healing, she takes the lead in bringing somatic meditation into the arenas of mentoring, relationships, family, well-being, and the arts.

This 10-week online course includes:

  • 15 hours of video teachings and guided meditations by Reggie Ray and Caroline Pfohl, recorded specifically for this course.
  • Guidance and accountability throughout the program by a Dharma Ocean senior teacher.
  • A live community gathering with either Reggie or Caroline, in which one of them will give teachings and answer questions (viewable after the live events).
  • Discussion forums and video conference calls facilitated by meditation instructors where you can ask questions and connect with other practitioners.
  • Study questions to deepen your learning and practice.

Course Structure

A new unit of course materials will be released each Thursday for the duration of the program.

Participants may engage with the course material at any time during the week, and previous weeks’ materials will be available to stream or download.

Participating in the forums and engaging with your meditation instructor are strongly encouraged but not required.

The Boundless Heart website will remain open for up to 60 days after the course is finished, so you may download materials or go through the course again at your own pace.

What are Dharma Ocean Foundation courses?

These are online courses designed to allow for a deep dive into the core Dharma Ocean practices. Currently, there are three developed courses, Awakening the Body, The Somatic Practice of Pure Awareness and Boundless Heart, Loving the Self. These courses are designed to be taken in order. More about the Foundation Courses.

How much time will this course require?

We suggest participants be able to set aside 8-10 hours weekly to get the most out of the course. The talks each week last between 30-60 minutes. Reggie recommends an additional 45 minutes of daily, guided practice, so you have time for the readings, to relate to the study questions, and to participate in the online Zoom calls and forums.

What happens if I miss a week, get sick, have an emergency, or am away for part of the course?

The materials will be available online for you to listen to whenever it’s convenient, and you will have access to the full website with all of the videos and audio practices for 60 days after the program ends, including downloading the audio teachings.

How does this differ from a live, residential retreat?

Live retreats are more immersive  (7-straight days of practice and teaching, for example), while our online courses are designed to be integrated into your daily life. The pace of the courses, and the time you have to practice, study and to ask questions, means that you are able to deeply explore how these practices impact every part of your life and your most meaningful relationships. This can encourage you to integrate the teachings immediately and with support.

While working alone with a CD series or a book are both wonderful ways to learn, when we are in the “container” of an online course, there is a sense of accountability through the schedule and through engaging with other participants. In today’s hectic and distracting world, it can be challenging to complete an online course. These foundation courses are designed to create the kind of accountability you would normally find in a residential retreat. Connection with others, group discussions, and personalized instruction all allow for a quality of learning and a depth of insight that can only come when one is engaged with a community of like-minded practitioners.

Prerequisite Training for This Course

This is the third online course which offers experiential training in the core somatic teachings and practices of the Dharma Ocean lineage. These Foundation Courses are designed to be incremental, with each course building on the practices of the previous ones. In order to get the most of out this program, participants are required to have taken the online courses Awakening the Body and The Somatic Practice of Pure Awareness.

However, those who have completed Dharma Ocean residential retreats that are part of the Meditation Yana and the Ground Yana may also qualify. The Ground Yana includes the online Awakening the Body as well as the residential retreat Meditating with the Body. The Meditation Yana includes the online programs The Somatic Practice of Pure Awareness and Sutrayana I, as well as the residential retreat Winter Meditation Intensive.

Participants for Boundless Heart need to have taken at least one course in each of these two yanas. For example, someone who attended both Meditating with the Body (Ground Yana) and the Winter Meditation Intensive (Meditation Yana) would qualify for this online course.

Dharma Ocean Vajrayana students may take any of the online courses in any order.
