This program is restricted to those who have previously attended Vajra Assembly.
The Vajrayana Training Intensive (VTI) is a three-week-long immersion in the view and practice of the vajradharma. It is the place where Dharma Ocean tantrikas gather annually to practice, enjoy the deep nourishment of the Vajrasangha, and receive Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche’s Vajradharma as it is unfolding in a living way in our Dharma Ocean mandala.
First Week of VTI
The first week of VTI will again be a Vajrayana Practice Intensive as well as Teacher Training (Deepening the Skill of Being: Training for New and Experienced MIs). Participants will choose which program they will do for their first week.
The Vajrayana Practice Intensive is an opportunity for simple, focused practice—a time during which we can immerse ourselves in our ngöndro, Vajrayogini, or formless practice. While a majority of the schedule will be practice, the intensive will be led by David Iozzi, and each practice group will be supported by specific teachings and discussion.
The Teacher Training, led by Caroline, is a full week of exploring the meaning and skills of our bodhisattva activity as MIs and mentors. This year, in keeping with our VTI theme of building authentic community, we will focus on honing our skillful means in relating to students and to one another, with openness, love, and clarity.
Blazing Mountain Retreat Center
Weeks Two and Three
During weeks two and three, we will practice together, engage with the teachings Reggie, Caroline and others offer, and we will also confab and dance and sing together, as mentioned in Reggie’s letter to the Vajrasangha.
We encourage everyone to read Reggie’s letter where he shares about this year’s retreat, the continued movement away from what we might call a “guru centered” Vajrayana community to one in which we share in the empowerment, authority and the responsibility of our practicing lineage.
We are also planning on sponsoring a Children’s Program during weeks two and three, in which an early education teacher will be supporting the children whose parents are attending VTI. The Children’s Program will offer a container for both parents and children to experience VTI.
About the Teachers
Dr. Reginald “Reggie” Ray draws on four decades of study and intensive meditation practicewithin the Tibetan Buddhist tradition to address the unique problems, inspirations, and spiritual imperatives of modern people. He is the founder and Spiritual Director of the Dharma Ocean Foundation, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the practice, study, and preservation of the teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and the practice lineage he embodied.
Caroline Pfohl is the lineage holder in the Dharma Ocean lineage and Spiritual Director of theDharma Ocean Foundation, along with Reggie Ray. She holds the role of Desung (Protector of Joy) for the community and has been named Reggie’s spiritual successor. She is also the Chair of the Dharma Ocean Board of Directors.
David Iozzi has been practicing for more than 20 years and training with Reggie since 2004. He holds the study and practice of meditation as his primary life commitment. In 2006 he developed a meditation program based on “Meditating with the Body” at a large, non-profit research institute where he worked as a research scientist and engineer. David’s teaching draws on his love of science and a background in Japanese martial arts and explores how the depth of being uncovered in practice manifests in everyday experience. In 2013 David moved to Boulder to serve as Dharma Ocean’s Executive Director.
Those who have attended VTI before may register for any two of the three weeks or for the full three-week VTI. If you have never attended a VTI before, you will need to attend all three weeks.
If you plan to participate in the Teacher Training, you also need to register separately for that program after registering for VTI.
Please plan to arrive between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. on your arrival day. Departure will be after breakfast on your scheduled departure day.

Dharma Ocean will be offering a chartered bus service directly from Denver Airport to Blazing Mountain Retreat Center on the days when larger groups are arriving or departing the center (July 22, July 29 and August 12). On the days when only a handful of people are arriving or departing, we’ll offer the shuttle service to and from Moffat for those riding the Express Arrow. The Getting Here page on the Blazing Mountain website provides details on the Express Arrow.
We suggest that you choose the charter option at registration if you need this service and would like to guarantee a seat. The cost of the shuttle is $140 round trip or $70 one-way.
If you do plan to use the shuttle service make sure your inbound flight allows for enough time to board the charter bus by 12:45 pm. We recommend that your flight arrives before 11:30 am. For the return trip, the charter bus will leave BMRC at 6:45 am and arrive at the Denver airport at 11:15 am. Please plan your outbound flight accordingly. We recommend a flight that departs after 1:00 pm.
