Sutrayana Hinayana
Tibetan Buddhism affirms that without a good intellectual and conceptual understanding of Buddhist philosophy, what we call “the view,” we default to ego’s opinions and to spiritual materialism. Moreover, the understanding of the Hinayana philosophical ground and the extensive teachings of Mahayana, especially on emptiness, are an absolutely necessary foundation for meditation practice. This Sutrayana course is an opportunity to address gaps in our conceptual understanding, which will then benefit our ongoing practice and our confidence in fully living the journey. In this course, the material will be approached from a more classical and intellectual standpoint than in the past.
Sutrayana is a two-course sequence. A knowledge of both the Hinayana and the Mahayana view is highly recommended for all practitioners. The course is also open to others interested in the topic. Even if you have previously taken Sutrayana, you might consider retaking it as we’ll be taking a more rigorous and historically informed approach.
