The practice of solitary retreat has been an essential feature of the practicing lineage since the time of the Buddha. As Trungpa Rinpoche taught, it is in the solitude of individual retreat that we meet ourselves in the most complete way.
Solitary retreat offers us an opportunity to explore the practices that we have learned and to begin to experience our lives in an incredibly direct way. Dharma Ocean students are encouraged to spend at least one week per year in solitary retreat — more if they are able — and are asked to complete varying solitary retreats at each stage of the path. The Cabin of the Crazy One, shown above, is available for rental to Dharma Ocean students. The larger Crestone spiritual community, with its many traditions and lineages, also offers a large number of retreat cabins for rental. In order to provide our students with additional solitary retreat opportunities, Dharma Ocean is planning the construction of a dozen solitary retreat cabins on our 58-acre hermitage site, just up the mountain from the Blazing Mountain Retreat Center.
